Taking a Strategic Approach to Address the Cyber Security Threats; Vancouver School Board's Journey

School districts today face an ever-changing set of risks in a world with rapidly changing technology. We are in an era of continuous breaches where reported cyber-attacks continue to increase, significantly impacting systems and compromising sensitive student and staff data.

Effective cyber security is more than an IT concern and requires engagement from all stakeholders. Yet, many districts are unclear of the risks and are grappling with growing frustrations and questions: What are the current exposures and risks? What security capabilities are needed to mitigate those risks? How can the district effectively communicate security? What’s the roadmap to help the district achieve their security objectives?

Based on extensive research, IBM developed the 10 Essential Practices security framework which defines all the critical components that must be considered to achieve a strong, holistic security posture in the 21st Century. In this session, IBM will provide an overview of current cyber threats/trends that inform the 10 Essential Practices security framework. The workshop enables district leadership teams to assess their security capabilities and readiness and develop a strategic road map to improve security governance, policies, processes and technology based on industry best practices.
