Heroic Failure: When Metrics don't Tell the Whole Story

In 2017 the University of Lethbridge replaced their Check-In application, a platform for new students to complete registration and pre-first day activities online. Despite a year in procurement to find the perfect solution, clear requirements, a rock solid project charter, and full governance support, the project was off the rails from the very first kick-off meeting.

In the end, despite all project KPI's being healthy and the students getting through the system, the project has been painted as a significant failure for the institution and the stakeholders are unhappy with the results. Listen, discuss, and talk through a case study in pragmatic crisis decision making, and the "heroic failure" involved in undertaking a project that is expected to fail, when the alternatives are even worse. This talk will focus on politics, stakeholder management, and dig into Project Managers and Project Management Officers' higher duty to the institution than their individual stakeholders.

Also, see some examples of the cutting-edge new platform that was developed through the failed project.
